Residential fires pose a significant danger, often leading to injuries, fatalities, and substantial property loss. In Utah, heating equipment, electrical malfunctions, and unattended open flames are among the most common causes of house fires.

Understanding fire hazards can help prevent future tragedies. Here are some common risks associated with residential fires:

  • Heating Equipment: Space heaters and gas heaters can ignite nearby materials if not placed safely. Keeping at least a three-foot clearance around heaters can reduce this risk.
  • Electrical Issues: Overloaded circuits, faulty wiring, and outdated electrical systems are frequent causes of house fires. Regular inspections can help prevent these hazards.
  • Unattended Candles or Cooking: Open flames from candles or stovetops can quickly spread if left unattended. Always extinguish flames before leaving a room.
  • Flammable Materials: Items such as curtains, bedding, and furniture can catch fire if placed too close to heat sources. Keeping flammable materials away from heaters and fireplaces is essential.
