Spanish Fork, UT (May 21, 2025) – A tragic crash occurred Sunday afternoon, May 18, on U.S. Highway 6 near mile marker 259, leaving one person dead and another injured. The incident happened around 2:00 p.m. and involved multiple vehicles during a heavy rainstorm, which created slick driving conditions in the area.
According to the Utah Highway Patrol, a grey Tesla traveling westbound lost control in the rain and spun into the eastbound lanes. The Tesla initially collided with a pop-up camper trailer being towed by an eastbound Ram truck. Seconds later, the Tesla was struck on the driver’s side by a white GMC Yukon also heading east.
The driver of the Tesla sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Yukon suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene. The individual driving the Ram truck was unharmed, according to officials. Authorities emphasized that the area was experiencing a severe rainstorm at the time, contributing to treacherous road conditions. The crash remains under investigation by UHP as they continue to analyze the sequence of events and contributing factors.
Our hearts go out to the family of the deceased and those impacted by this crash.
Car Accidents in Utah
Each year in Utah, adverse weather contributes to hundreds of crashes across the state. Rain, snow, and icy roads can dramatically reduce traction, visibility, and driver response times. When storms roll in, highways like U.S. 6 become especially hazardous. According to state reports, weather-related crashes often lead to serious injuries or fatalities, especially when high-speed or multi-vehicle collisions are involved.
Driving during poor weather requires extra caution. Here are several safety tips drivers in Utah should keep in mind:
- Slow Down in Rain or Snow: Wet or icy roads reduce tire grip. Lowering your speed gives you more time to react and helps prevent hydroplaning. Even if you’re running late, slowing down can save lives.
- Use Headlights and Maintain Visibility: Always turn on your headlights during storms. Not only does this help you see better, but it also makes your vehicle more visible to others. Ensure your windshield wipers are in good condition before driving.
- Keep a Safe Distance: Following too closely in poor weather conditions increases the risk of rear-end collisions. Allow for a longer braking distance when the pavement is slick.
- Avoid Sudden Movements: Sharp turns, abrupt braking, or quick acceleration can cause your vehicle to lose control. Drive smoothly and plan lane changes or turns in advance.
- Know When to Wait It Out: If conditions become too dangerous, don’t hesitate to pull off the road into a safe location. Sometimes, the best decision is to delay your travel until the weather improves.
