Car Accidents in Utah
Every year, vehicle crashes occur all across Utah, disrupting the lives of drivers, passengers, and families. Whether it’s due to speed, distraction, or roadway design, accidents can leave long-lasting effects. Data from the Utah Department of Public Safety highlights a steady number of injury-related crashes, even on local roads where drivers may feel more at ease.
Among the many dangers drivers face, one of the most serious is weather-related hazards. Here’s how Utah’s climate can contribute to crash risks:
- Rain and Hydroplaning: Even light rain can make roads slick—especially in the first hour of rainfall when oil residues mix with water. Hydroplaning reduces traction and increases the risk of losing control.
- Snow and Ice: Utah winters bring significant snowfall. Black ice is especially hazardous because drivers often don’t see it until it’s too late. Slippery roads lead to longer braking times and more rear-end collisions.
- Fog and Reduced Visibility: Dense morning fog or low-hanging clouds obscure road signs and traffic signals. Drivers may fail to see pedestrians, curves, or vehicles in time to avoid a crash.
- High Winds: Sudden gusts can make it hard to stay in one lane—particularly for trucks or taller vehicles. Blowing debris or dust can also cause momentary blindness or distraction.
- Heat and Tire Blowouts: Extreme summer heat can increase tire pressure and lead to blowouts, particularly during longer highway travel. This is especially dangerous at high speeds.
