Bicycle Accidents in Utah
In Utah, bicycle collisions continue to be a growing concern, especially in urban areas like Salt Lake City. According to the Utah Department of Public Safety, dozens of cyclists are hurt or killed each year in motor vehicle crashes statewide. Cyclists are more vulnerable to serious injuries compared to drivers and passengers in vehicles. Knowing the facts about bicycle safety in Utah can help riders and drivers make better choices on our roadways.
Staying aware of potential outcomes can help you better understand what you or a loved one may face after a bicycle collision:
- Head and Brain Injuries: Cyclists are especially prone to head trauma in an accident, even when wearing helmets. Concussions and traumatic brain injuries can lead to long-term health complications that impact work and daily life.
- Fractures and Broken Bones: Arms, legs, ribs, and collarbones are commonly broken when a cyclist is thrown from their bicycle. These injuries often require surgeries and months of rehabilitation, leaving victims unable to return to work right away.
- Internal Injuries: The force of impact in a vehicle-versus-bicycle collision can cause damage to organs, leading to internal bleeding. These injuries may not be visible immediately but can become life-threatening without prompt diagnosis and treatment.
- Spinal Cord Injuries: Bicyclists who are struck at high speeds risk severe spinal cord trauma, which can result in partial or complete paralysis. Victims often face significant lifestyle changes and ongoing medical expenses.
- Emotional and Psychological Impact: Beyond physical wounds, many accident survivors struggle with anxiety, depression, or post-traumatic stress. These challenges can affect relationships, work, and the ability to enjoy cycling again.
