Duchesne County, UT (May 26, 2025) – A 45-year-old man was killed in a tragic motorcycle accident overnight on Saturday, May 24, along State Route 35 near milepost 30 in Duchesne County. The incident unfolded after the rider collided with a deer while heading east on the highway.
According to the Utah Highway Patrol, the initial impact caused the rider to lose control and crash in the roadway. Moments later, another eastbound driver came around a bend and noticed the motorcycle lying across the road. Believing the bike was drifting into their lane, the driver swerved in an attempt to avoid it but ultimately struck the motorcyclist, who was lying on the right shoulder of the highway.
Emergency crews responded to the scene, but the motorcyclist was pronounced dead. The identity of the man has not yet been released publicly. Authorities are continuing to investigate the crash and will determine if any additional factors were involved.
Our thoughts go out to the victim’s family during this incredibly difficult time.
Motorcycle Accidents in Utah
Utah has seen a concerning number of motorcycle fatalities in recent years. Motorcyclists are especially vulnerable to hazards on the road, including wildlife, poor visibility, and unpredictable traffic conditions. In 2023 alone, dozens of riders lost their lives across the state, with many crashes occurring on rural highways like SR-35.
Motorcycle accidents often come with a range of physical and legal challenges. Below are a few key topics to consider when handling the aftermath of a serious crash:
- Wildlife Collisions: Deer and other animals are a frequent hazard, especially at night or in rural areas. Striking an animal can cause riders to lose control instantly, often without warning. These crashes can be particularly dangerous due to the lack of protection motorcycles provide.
- Roadway Visibility and Lighting: Remote areas like SR-35 often have limited lighting, which can make it difficult for other drivers to see hazards in time. Even a downed motorcycle may not be visible until it’s too late to avoid a second crash.
- Protective Gear and Injury Risk: Even with helmets and padded gear, motorcycle riders are at high risk of head trauma, spinal injuries, and internal bleeding. Survival often depends on both gear and timely emergency response.
- Secondary Collisions: Riders who fall during an accident may still be in the roadway, creating risks for being struck again. These secondary collisions are often fatal, as the victims are incapacitated and less visible to oncoming traffic.
- Investigations and Fault: In multi-vehicle crashes, establishing liability is often complex. Investigations typically involve analyzing roadway markings, vehicle positions, and driver statements.
