Car Accidents in Utah
Utah drivers face the risk of motor vehicle accidents on a daily basis. The Utah Department of Public Safety reports thousands of crashes statewide each year, many of which result in injuries requiring emergency medical attention. Highway collisions are especially common during evening hours when visibility decreases and traffic increases.
Below is a breakdown of common causes of accidents and how they can often be prevented:
- Distracted Driving: Whether texting, adjusting the radio, or using GPS, taking your eyes off the road for even a few seconds can lead to disaster. Distractions are a leading cause of rear-end and intersection collisions.
- Speeding: Driving above the posted limit reduces reaction time and increases the severity of crashes. Speed-related accidents are especially common on highways and rural roads where enforcement is less frequent.
- Driving Under the Influence: Alcohol and drug impairment continues to be a significant cause of serious crashes in Utah. Driving while impaired greatly affects coordination, reaction time, and judgment.
- Following Too Closely: Tailgating reduces the margin for error. When traffic suddenly slows or stops, drivers who follow too closely often cannot react in time, resulting in preventable rear-end collisions.
- Failure to Yield: Neglecting to yield the right of way at intersections or during lane changes frequently causes side-impact crashes. These types of accidents can lead to serious injuries, especially when high speeds are involved.
- Weather Conditions: Snow, rain, and ice create slippery roads that increase stopping distances. Drivers often underestimate how dangerous poor weather conditions can be, particularly in mountain regions.
