According to Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Jared Heywood, the motorcyclist was traveling on the shoulder of SR-56 when a pickup truck attempted to pass. Emergency personnel from Cedar City Police, Cedar City Fire, Gold Cross Ambulance, and the Iron County Sheriff’s Office responded. The injured motorcyclist was transported via air to a nearby hospital for advanced medical care. As of now, his condition remains critical. Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.
We hope the injured motorcyclist makes a full and speedy recovery.
Motorcycle Accidents in Utah
Motorcyclists face a much higher risk of serious injury or death when involved in accidents. According to the Utah Department of Public Safety, motorcycle crashes are significantly more fatal per mile traveled than other vehicle types. The state’s “100 Deadliest Days,” from Memorial Day through Labor Day, sees a notable spike in motorcycle and highway fatalities.
Here are key points to keep in mind when sharing the road with motorcycles:
- Give Motorcyclists Extra Room: Motorcycles are smaller and harder to see. Always allow more following distance than you would for a car. This gives both drivers more time to react to sudden changes.
- Check Blind Spots Carefully: Many crashes happen because drivers fail to notice a motorcycle in their blind spot. Always double-check before changing lanes or turning.
- Understand Motorcycle Maneuvering: Riders often adjust position within a lane to improve visibility or avoid hazards. This is not erratic behavior—it’s defensive riding. Give them the space they need to stay safe.
- Avoid Distractions Behind the Wheel: Looking away for even a second can result in missing a smaller vehicle like a motorcycle. Keep your eyes on the road and both hands on the wheel.
- Don’t Underestimate Speed: Motorcycles may appear farther away or slower than they actually are due to their size. Take an extra moment before turning left or pulling out in front of one.
