Is Driving With Headphones Dangerous?

In recent years, there are more and more people in their cars with headphones on. There are several reasons for this such as: listening to music, podcasts, audiobooks, hands-free phone calls, noise cancellation, and distraction reduction. While driving with headphones is not illegal in Utah to drive with headphones, it can be dangerous. The Zebra has a few reasons for why it can be dangerous.

You Can’t Hear Emergency Vehicles

Headphones, especially the newer versions, cancel out the noise around you. This means that when emergency vehicles are trying to pass, you might not hear to move to the side.

It’s a Distraction

When you are listening to something, especially with headphones, you can become distracted. You are not fully focused on the roads, which can cause you to miss a pedestrian, red light, or lane changes.

You Might Miss A Warning Honk

Occasionally someone might honk at you in warning, and if you can’t hear those.

You Won’t Hear Problems With Your Car

Often we are notified by problems with our vehicles by warning noises or broken parts.

Headphones Block the Noise of Other Cars

There might be a car in blindspot that you cannot see, but you could potentially hear their motors. If you have headphones in, you would miss that extra protection.

Driving with headphones is illegal in other states, so it is not a good idea to do this on long roadtrips. Although it does make your car rides dull to not have music, it is better to be safe than entertained. Choose to drive safely and don’t wear your headphones in the driver’s seat.
