Leeds, UT (May 22, 2025) – A serious multi-vehicle crash occurred on Wednesday morning, May 21, along northbound Interstate 15 near mile marker 22 in the Leeds area. Emergency personnel responded just before 8:00 a.m. to the scene, which involved a Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) street sweeper, a Nissan passenger vehicle, and a silver Jeep.

At the time of the incident, the UDOT street sweeper was clearing debris from an earlier crash in the same area. While in the far-left lane, it was rear-ended by a Nissan, which then spun into the path of a Jeep. The impact left the Nissan heavily damaged and trapped the driver inside.

Fire crews from Hurricane Valley Fire and Rescue worked to extricate the Nissan’s driver, who sustained life-threatening injuries. The victim was transported in critical condition to St. George Regional Hospital. The Jeep’s driver suffered minor injuries, while the operator of the street sweeper was unharmed.

Due to the severity of the crash, the entire northbound stretch of Interstate 15 in the area was closed to traffic until shortly before 11:00 a.m. The Utah Highway Patrol is currently investigating the cause. The Jeep sustained significant front and side damage, and the Nissan was completely destroyed. The street sweeper also received damage to its rear.

We hope those injured in this accident recover quickly.

According to the Utah Department of Public Safety, there were over 61,000 motor vehicle crashes reported statewide in 2023. Interstate collisions are often among the most severe due to high travel speeds and complex traffic flow. Multi-vehicle crashes like the one in Leeds can be especially dangerous when heavy equipment or disabled vehicles are involved.

After a serious crash, victims and their families often face a range of difficulties, including:

  • Emergency Extraction and Trauma: Crashes involving entrapment require specialized rescue teams. Victims may suffer compounded injuries from the force of the crash and delays in treatment due to extrication time.
  • Hospitalization and ICU Stays: Those with critical injuries often spend days or weeks in intensive care units. Treatment can include multiple surgeries, long-term medication, and extended recovery periods.
  • Emotional Toll on Victims and Families: Beyond the physical damage, families often deal with fear, uncertainty, and emotional trauma after seeing a loved one seriously hurt. This toll can last well beyond the crash itself.
  • High Medical and Transportation Costs: Transport by ambulance or helicopter, along with emergency care, ICU stays, and rehab, can result in overwhelming bills—especially when insurance coverage is limited.
