Car Accidents in Utah
Here in Utah, vehicle crashes are a leading cause of injury-related hospital visits. In 2023, over 61,000 collisions were documented statewide, with thousands resulting in injuries. From icy highways to busy intersections, conditions vary but risks persist. Many crashes stem from avoidable behaviors or lapses in attention. Understanding these patterns and what to do after a crash can make a difference in outcomes for victims.
One major contributing factor to crashes is weather and environmental conditions.
- Utah’s roads can change quickly—sunshine in the morning, rain or snow by the afternoon. Wet or icy roads reduce traction and increase braking distances, especially at higher speeds.
- Fog and low visibility present added danger. Drivers may miss signs, pedestrians, or sudden stops. Reduced visibility also makes it harder for other vehicles to see you, increasing the risk of rear-end collisions.
- Sun glare, particularly during sunrise or sunset, can temporarily blind drivers. Adjusting your sun visor and wearing polarized sunglasses can reduce this risk but may not eliminate it.
- High winds, especially in canyon areas or near mountain passes, can affect vehicle control. Larger vehicles like trucks or trailers are particularly susceptible to tipping or drifting.
- Lastly, flooded roadways can pose life-threatening hazards. Even shallow water can cause hydroplaning or stall engines, leaving drivers stranded or swept into deeper water.
