Car Accidents in Utah
According to the Utah Department of Public Safety, more than 18,000 people were hurt in car accidents across Utah last year alone. Collisions happen for many reasons—ranging from distracted driving to unsafe speeds—and they continue to affect individuals and families throughout the state. Whether on major highways or city streets, car accidents are an unfortunate reality for Utah drivers. Recognizing the causes and staying alert can help reduce the risk of injury.
A growing concern for drivers today is nighttime driving and visibility.
- As daylight fades, depth perception and reaction time become compromised. Headlights help, but even well-lit roads present visibility challenges, especially for spotting pedestrians, cyclists, or debris in time.
- Glare from oncoming headlights can cause temporary blindness. Drivers who are older or have eye conditions may be especially vulnerable. Anti-glare glasses and keeping windshields clean can help reduce risks.
- Animals crossing the road are a common hazard after dusk. Wildlife is more active at night, and high-speed collisions with animals can cause severe vehicle damage and injury.
- Drivers may also experience drowsiness, especially during late commutes. Fatigued driving is one of the leading causes of nighttime crashes. Short naps, caffeine, and carpooling can help manage exhaustion.
- In addition, impaired driving incidents spike during evening hours, especially on weekends. Even one drink can impair judgment and reaction times. Always plan for a safe ride home.
