Car Accidents in Utah
In Utah, thousands of people are injured in car crashes every year—many during daytime hours when roadways are busiest. Whether on a highway or residential road, these incidents can lead to painful injuries, financial burdens, and emotional distress. One factor that often plays a major role in Utah crashes is poor weather. Here’s what drivers and victims should know about this hazard:
- Rain and Slick Roads: Rain is a leading cause of reduced traction, especially during the first few minutes after it starts. Water mixes with oil on the pavement, making roads slippery and increasing the chance of hydroplaning or skidding.
- Snow and Ice Hazards: Utah’s winter conditions bring snow, sleet, and ice. Black ice, in particular, can be nearly invisible and extremely dangerous. Accidents in snowy conditions often involve multiple vehicles and chain reactions.
- Fog and Reduced Visibility: Fog can dramatically reduce visibility, making it hard to see vehicles, pedestrians, and road signs. Many weather-related crashes occur because drivers don’t reduce speed or increase following distance.
- High Winds: Strong gusts, particularly in canyon areas, can cause drivers to lose control or drift between lanes. High-profile vehicles like trucks and vans are especially at risk.
- Inadequate Vehicle Preparation: Worn tires, broken wipers, or low fluid levels can make a vehicle unfit for harsh conditions. Drivers are encouraged to check their vehicles regularly during storm seasons.
