Millard County, UT (April 18, 2025) – A chaotic and serious crash on Interstate 15 in Millard County left three people hospitalized and shut down the southbound lanes for several hours Wednesday afternoon, April 16. The accident unfolded near mile marker 177 and involved multiple vehicles, including a Tesla, two semi-trucks, and an SUV.
According to reports, a Tesla traveling northbound began driving erratically, eventually coming to a stop on the interstate before continuing in the wrong direction. The Tesla then sideswiped a semi-truck and moments later slammed head-on into an SUV. The collision sent the SUV off the roadway, where it rolled over.
The driver of the Tesla, along with two occupants of the SUV, were transported to local hospitals for treatment. Their conditions were not released, but officials confirmed all three sustained injuries in the crash. No one inside the first semi-truck was injured. However, a second semi struck crash debris, resulting in minor damage. Traffic on southbound I-15 was diverted to a frontage road, creating significant congestion throughout the region. Authorities predicted the highway wouldn’t fully reopen until after 11 p.m., leaving travelers stranded or rerouted for much of the evening. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
We hope all those injured in this accident are able to heal and recover soon.
Car Accidents in Utah
Utah’s major highways, including I-15, see a high volume of serious crashes each year. According to the Utah Department of Public Safety, speeding, wrong-way driving, and impaired operation are leading factors in highway collisions. These accidents often result in severe injuries or fatalities, particularly at high speeds or when multiple vehicles are involved.
To better understand the impact of highway crashes, here are a few important takeaways:
- Wrong-Way Driving Risks: Traveling the wrong direction on a highway drastically increases the risk of a head-on collision. These incidents are among the deadliest types of crashes and frequently result in severe trauma or death.
- Impact on Commercial Traffic: When crashes involve semis or happen near freight routes, the ripple effect is widespread. Road closures delay supply chains and increase congestion on smaller nearby roads, creating challenges for emergency response.
- Crash Scene Debris: After a major wreck, debris scattered across the road poses a secondary hazard. Vehicles trying to avoid debris can crash themselves, creating a chain reaction of incidents.
- Long-Term Injuries: Victims of highway accidents often suffer long-term effects such as spinal injuries, traumatic brain injuries, and orthopedic damage. These conditions may require surgeries, therapy, and ongoing medical care.
- Highway Crash Investigations: These investigations are complex, often involving multiple witnesses, camera footage, and reconstruction experts. It’s important to begin gathering evidence early to preserve critical details.
