Payson, UT (May 10, 2025) – A mother and four children were injured Wednesday afternoon when they were struck by a vehicle while walking through a crosswalk in Payson. The incident occurred near 800 South around 3:00 p.m., according to local reports.
Amber Averett, a mother of two, was walking with her 6-year-old son, her 1-year-old son in a stroller, and two other children, family friends aged 6 and 9, when a Nissan Maxima made a turn and struck the group. Authorities said the female driver told investigators she did not see the family in the crosswalk. All five pedestrians were hit by the vehicle. The impact caused the stroller carrying baby Noah to flip over.
Averett, who was transported to Spanish Fork Hospital along with her children, sustained head trauma and a broken leg. Despite her injuries, she remained conscious and was able to speak with officers at the scene. The Payson Police Department continues to investigate the crash. It is unclear if the driver will face charges or citations related to the incident.
We extend our thoughts to the Averett family and wish them all a smooth and full recovery.
Pedestrian Accidents in Utah
In Utah, pedestrian safety remains a significant concern. According to the Utah Department of Public Safety, over 800 pedestrian-involved crashes were reported statewide in 2023. Of those, more than 85% resulted in injury or death.
Being hit while walking—even in a designated crosswalk—can lead to serious harm. Here are some things to keep in mind about pedestrian-related crashes:
- Children Are Particularly Vulnerable: Younger pedestrians may be harder to see and are less likely to anticipate traffic patterns. Accidents involving children often result in longer recovery periods and emotional trauma.
- Driver Inattention Is a Leading Cause: Many pedestrian crashes are caused by distracted or inattentive drivers, especially in neighborhoods and residential intersections where foot traffic is common.
- Crosswalk Laws Are in Place to Protect Walkers: Utah law requires drivers to yield to pedestrians in marked crosswalks. Failing to do so can result in citations and liability for resulting injuries.
- Recovery Can Be Financially and Emotionally Taxing: Medical expenses, therapy, and missed work can put financial stress on families. Legal guidance is often necessary to ensure rightful compensation.
