Fatal crashes like the one on I-15 are a sobering reminder of the dangers present on Utah’s highways. The Utah Department of Public Safety reports that hundreds of lives are lost each year in vehicle collisions throughout the state. Contributing factors often include high speeds, driver distraction, fatigue, and lane departures. Interstate travel, with its higher speeds and dense traffic, increases the potential for severe accidents.

For families affected by fatal crashes, here are some important considerations:

  • Filing a Wrongful Death Claim: When a fatal crash is caused by another driver’s actions, surviving family members may pursue compensation for financial losses, emotional distress, and funeral expenses. These claims must be filed within a set period under Utah law.
  • Crash Scene Investigations: Fatal crashes trigger in-depth investigations, which can involve multiple agencies. Preserving vehicle evidence, eyewitness accounts, and official reports is essential for building a case.
  • Funeral and Burial Costs: The sudden cost of services and memorials can place a burden on families. A wrongful death claim may help cover these expenses as part of the overall damages sought.
  • Loss of Income and Support: If the deceased was a household provider, the loss of their earnings can create long-term financial difficulties. Utah courts allow families to recover damages for lost future income and benefits.
  • Emotional Impact and Legal Guidance: The loss of a loved one is emotionally devastating. A compassionate legal team can guide you through the legal process while you focus on healing.

If your family is grieving after a fatal collision, speak with a trusted wrongful death attorney as soon as possible. Taking legal steps early ensures that your rights are protected and that critical evidence is preserved.
