Pleasant Grove, UT (April 30, 2025) – A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded Tuesday afternoon in Pleasant Grove when a 9-year-old boy was fatally struck by a truck while crossing the street near 2600 North and 900 West. The crash occurred shortly after 4 p.m. on April 29 as the child was making his way home from school.
Authorities said the boy entered a crosswalk at the intersection as a truck turned onto 2600 North. It remains unclear whether the child was walking his bike or riding it at the time, though he was wearing a helmet and had the bicycle with him. First responders arrived quickly and began lifesaving measures at the scene before transporting him to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Witnesses described the vehicle as a white truck driven by an older man and noted it had a handicap placard. They also reported that the driver left the scene following the collision. Police were able to locate and identify the driver and have spoken with him, although he had not been taken into custody as of Tuesday evening.
Pleasant Grove Police Sgt. Derick Shumway acknowledged that 2600 North is a heavily traveled road, particularly as the city continues to grow. He urged both drivers and pedestrians to stay alert and be mindful of one another, especially near intersections and crosswalks. The crash remains under active investigation.
Our deepest sympathies go out to the family of the young boy during this unimaginable time.
Wrongful Death Cases in Utah
Losing a loved one, especially a child, in an accident is among the most painful experiences a family can face. In Utah, traffic fatalities involving pedestrians are not uncommon, with several tragic incidents reported annually. These heartbreaking events often raise questions about responsibility, justice, and how to move forward.
Here are several key legal and emotional issues families often confront in the aftermath of a wrongful death:
- Civil vs. Criminal Proceedings: Even if no criminal charges are immediately filed, families may still pursue a wrongful death claim through civil court to hold the responsible party accountable and recover financial damages.
- Funeral and Medical Costs: Unexpected loss often brings significant costs. Ambulance fees, hospital treatment, and burial expenses can place a heavy burden on grieving families already struggling with emotional trauma.
- Loss of Companionship and Future Support: In cases involving minors, families may seek damages for emotional pain and the long-term loss of companionship, guidance, and potential support the child would have provided throughout life.
- Ongoing Investigations: Police investigations may take time, especially in hit-and-run cases. An attorney can help ensure families stay informed, and that key evidence is preserved while waiting for results.
- Insurance Complications: Dealing with insurance companies while mourning a loss can feel overwhelming. An attorney acts on the family’s behalf, helping manage paperwork, settlement negotiations, and policy reviews.
