Car Accidents in Utah
Car accidents occur daily across Utah, and many of them result from preventable behaviors. Driver distraction is one of the most common causes, with mobile phone use, eating, and adjusting in-car settings taking attention away from the road. Even a momentary distraction can lead to rear-end collisions, lane departures, or crashes at intersections.

Speeding is another major contributor to accidents. Drivers who exceed speed limits or drive too fast for road conditions have less time to react to obstacles, traffic signals, or sudden stops. High-speed crashes often result in more severe injuries due to the increased force of impact. Road conditions, including ice, snow, and rain, can further exacerbate the dangers of speeding by reducing tire traction and increasing stopping distances.
Failure to yield is a common factor in intersection-related crashes. Many drivers misjudge the speed of oncoming traffic when making left turns or fail to stop at red lights and stop signs. This type of negligence often leads to dangerous T-bone collisions, which can cause serious injuries, especially to passengers on the impacted side of the vehicle.
Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs remains a persistent issue in Utah. Impaired drivers have reduced reaction times, impaired judgment, and difficulty staying in their lane. DUI-related accidents frequently result in severe or fatal injuries, making it one of the most dangerous causes of crashes.
Drowsy driving is another risk that is often overlooked. Fatigued drivers experience slower reflexes, impaired concentration, and even microsleeps, where they momentarily lose consciousness. Long-distance truck drivers, night shift workers, and those with sleep disorders are particularly at risk of causing fatigue-related crashes.
