Bicycle Accidents in Utah
Cycling is growing in popularity across Utah, but so are the risks that come with it. Despite infrastructure improvements, many riders still face serious hazards from inattentive drivers. According to the Utah Department of Public Safety, dozens of bicycle-related crashes occur each year statewide, many of which result in serious injuries. Urban areas like Salt Lake City pose additional challenges due to heavy traffic and limited bike lanes.
If you’re a cyclist, it’s important to know the kinds of injuries that are common in vehicle-bike crashes:
- Head Trauma: Even with helmets, bicyclists are vulnerable to concussions and other traumatic brain injuries when struck by a vehicle.
- Fractures: Collisions often result in broken arms, legs, ribs, or collarbones. Recovery times vary but often involve surgery or casting.
- Spinal Injuries: A sudden impact can damage the spine, leading to long-term pain or, in severe cases, permanent mobility loss.
- Facial Injuries: Riders may suffer facial lacerations, dental injuries, or eye trauma in accidents where they’re thrown forward.
- Internal Injuries: Blunt-force impacts to the torso can lead to internal bleeding or damage to vital organs, sometimes requiring emergency surgery.
- Road Rash: When cyclists hit the pavement, abrasions and cuts—commonly known as road rash—can become infected if not properly treated.
