Salt Lake City, UT (June 1, 2025) – A heartbreaking accident occurred on Friday, May 30, in Salt Lake City’s Liberty Wells neighborhood. Around 5:45 p.m., emergency crews were called to the scene near 350 East and Wilson Avenue (1750 South) following an incident where a child was struck by an SUV in a residential driveway.
According to the Salt Lake City Police Department, the crash happened at low speed and involved a family member of the child. The child was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition but sadly later passed away from their injuries. Police have not released further information about the child’s age or identity at this time.
The driver involved remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. Wilson Avenue was temporarily closed between 300 and 400 East as the major crash investigation team worked to gather evidence and piece together the circumstances surrounding the accident.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones affected by this tragic loss.
Car Accidents in Utah
Throughout Utah, car accidents remain a serious concern, especially in residential areas where lower speeds can still result in devastating consequences. Statistics indicate that thousands of crashes happen each year, and sadly, incidents involving pedestrians, including children, are not uncommon. Vigilance and caution are critical, particularly in neighborhoods and driveways where visibility may be limited.
Understanding the importance of driveway safety can help prevent similar tragedies:
- Always Check Behind the Vehicle: Before moving a vehicle, especially an SUV or larger car with bigger blind spots, it’s crucial to check around and behind for children or pets that might not be visible from the driver’s seat.
- Use Technology: Backup cameras and sensors provide added visibility, but they should supplement, not replace, manual checks. Walk around the vehicle before driving to ensure the area is clear.
- Educate Children: Teaching children about the dangers of playing near parked vehicles can reduce risks. Setting clear boundaries about safe play areas is key.
- Go Slow: When maneuvering in residential areas or driveways, drive slowly and cautiously. Even low-speed impacts can have severe consequences for vulnerable individuals like children.
