Car Accidents in Utah
Motor vehicle accidents continue to affect thousands across Utah each year. Crashes happen daily throughout the state, and several result in serious injuries that require hospitalization, rehabilitation, or long-term care. The Utah Department of Public Safety reports thousands of injury-related crashes every year — a reminder of the risks all drivers face.
When collisions happen at intersections, they often involve additional risks and complications. Here are some important facts about intersection-related crashes:
- Higher Risk of Side-Impact Collisions: Intersections are common locations for T-bone or broadside crashes, especially when drivers run red lights or fail to yield. These types of accidents can cause severe injuries to passengers seated near the point of impact.
- Conflicting Right-of-Way Judgments: Misjudging who has the right-of-way leads to many intersection crashes. Drivers turning left across oncoming traffic or entering from stop signs often cause preventable accidents.
- Increased Pedestrian and Cyclist Involvement: Urban intersections often include pedestrian crosswalks and bike lanes. A momentary distraction or visibility issue can result in a serious injury to someone crossing the street or cycling through the intersection.
- Signal Timing and Speed Miscalculations: Some crashes occur because drivers try to beat a yellow light or misjudge the time needed to clear the intersection. These decisions leave little margin for error, especially when opposing traffic is moving quickly.
- Multiple Vehicle Chain Reactions: Crashes at busy intersections frequently involve more than two vehicles. A single impact can create a chain reaction, affecting multiple cars and complicating liability.
