Salt Lake City, UT (March 9, 2024) — A serious crash involving a UTA paratransit bus and two other vehicles resulted in one person being ejected from the bus along State Route 201 on Friday morning.
According to the Utah Highway Patrol, the accident occurred near mile marker 14 at 3000 West. Authorities say the collision happened when a black sedan, traveling southbound on Interstate 215 and attempting to merge onto eastbound Route 201, lost control while coming around the ramp at high speed. The sedan then struck the paratransit bus, causing one passenger to be ejected through a window.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and transported the injured individual to a hospital with serious injuries. Another vehicle was also involved in the crash but sustained only minor damage. The total number of people injured remains unclear.
Following the incident, all eastbound lanes of Route 201 at the I-215 ramps in Salt Lake City were closed. Officials initially estimated that the roadway would be reopened within 30 to 60 minutes.
Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families, and we wish them a full recovery.
Bus Accidents in Utah
Bus accidents in Utah, though less common than other types of crashes, can have severe consequences. Public transit and paratransit buses often carry multiple passengers, making incidents particularly dangerous. In Utah, data shows that traffic accidents involving large vehicles account for a significant percentage of roadway injuries each year. Some of the leading factors in these accidents include:

- Driver Error: Speeding, distracted driving, and failure to yield can lead to severe crashes, particularly at highway ramps and intersections.
- Road Conditions: Slippery roads due to weather or poorly maintained highways can contribute to loss of vehicle control.
- Mechanical Failures: Brake failures, tire blowouts, and other malfunctions can make it difficult for buses to stop safely.
- Passenger-Related Issues: Standing passengers, unsecured wheelchairs, and sudden movements inside the bus can lead to injuries in a crash.
