Car Accidents in Utah
In 2023, more than 18,000 people were injured in vehicle crashes across Utah, with a substantial number of those occurring during off-peak hours. Interstates such as I-80 and I-15 are common sites for collisions, particularly during late-night or early-morning hours when driver fatigue and low visibility contribute to higher risks. Even light traffic doesn’t eliminate the potential for serious injury in high-speed environments.
Overnight crashes often involve driver fatigue and reduced awareness.
- Sleep-deprived drivers have slower reaction times and impaired decision-making abilities, making early morning hours among the most dangerous for travel.
- Limited visibility during nighttime hours makes it harder to detect hazards or changes in traffic flow. Headlight glare and poorly lit areas can contribute to sudden braking or swerving.
- Drivers may encounter impaired motorists during late-night and early-morning windows, especially near weekend nights. Alcohol or drug use significantly increases crash severity and reduces survivability.
- Speeding is more common during low-traffic hours, leading to more severe impacts and greater injury risk in single or multi-vehicle collisions.
- Emergency response can also be affected by the time of day, with fewer units on active patrol during overnight hours, sometimes delaying aid.
