Salt Lake City, UT (April 1, 2025) – Early on the morning of April 1, a serious auto-pedestrian accident occurred in Salt Lake City, leaving a woman in her late 50s critically injured. Authorities with the Salt Lake City Police Department were called to the scene at approximately 5:38 a.m., near 4980 West California Avenue. According to their report, the woman had been crossing the street when she was struck by a vehicle.
The driver initially left the scene but later contacted emergency services and returned. First responders provided initial aid before transferring the woman to an area hospital, where she remains in critical condition. Investigators from the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Team were dispatched to the area and are actively working to determine the sequence of events that led to the crash.
Officers temporarily closed off the affected portion of California Avenue to manage the investigation and ensure the safety of those on the scene. Traffic delays were reported in the area as law enforcement conducted their work. Authorities have not released the name of the injured woman or whether any citations have been issued.
We hope the woman who was injured in this accident recovers quickly.
Pedestrian Accidents in Utah
Utah sees hundreds of pedestrian-related crashes each year, many of which result in serious injuries or worse. In 2022 alone, more than 1,000 pedestrian accidents were reported statewide, with over 40 resulting in fatalities. These incidents often happen during early morning or evening hours when visibility is lower, or in areas with limited pedestrian infrastructure. Victims of these crashes often face long recoveries and mounting medical costs.
When it comes to pedestrian accidents, it’s important to understand the range of injuries a person might sustain. Here are some of the most commonly reported injuries in these types of crashes:
- Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs): A blow to the head during impact can result in concussions or more severe brain trauma. These injuries often require long-term treatment and can lead to cognitive and physical impairments.
- Spinal Cord Injuries: Depending on the location and severity, spinal cord damage can cause partial or total paralysis. Victims may require surgeries, physical therapy, and in some cases, lifetime support.
- Fractures and Broken Bones: Pedestrians struck by vehicles often suffer from broken legs, ribs, arms, or hips. These injuries can affect mobility and require extended recovery periods.
- Internal Injuries: Blunt force trauma can cause internal bleeding or damage to organs, which might not be immediately visible but can become life-threatening without rapid medical intervention.
- Soft Tissue Injuries: Damage to muscles, tendons, and ligaments can cause long-lasting pain and limit movement, often requiring physical therapy or even surgical repair.
- Psychological Trauma: Beyond physical damage, survivors frequently suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, or depression following the event, impacting overall quality of life.
