Pedestrian Accidents in Utah
Every year, Utah sees far too many pedestrian-involved crashes that result in severe injuries or fatalities. According to the Utah Department of Public Safety, pedestrian deaths have been rising in recent years due to factors like driver inattention, failure to yield, and vehicles not spotting people crossing busy streets. Staying alert and using crosswalks can help, but sadly, pedestrians remain among the most vulnerable on Utah’s roadways.
Understanding what can lead to these accidents may help prevent them:
- Driver Inattention: Many pedestrian accidents happen because drivers are looking at their phones, adjusting the radio, or otherwise distracted. Even a few seconds of distraction can have tragic consequences.
- Failure to Yield Right of Way: Utah law requires drivers to yield to pedestrians in marked crosswalks and intersections. When drivers ignore this, pedestrians can be struck unexpectedly.
- Low Visibility: Poor lighting or bad weather makes it harder for drivers to see people walking, especially at night or early in the morning. Wearing reflective clothing and staying in well-lit areas can help.
- Speeding: Speeding reduces a driver’s reaction time and increases the force of impact. In pedestrian crashes, higher speeds often mean more severe injuries or death.
- Unsafe Backing or Turning: Drivers pulling out of driveways or side streets without checking carefully can hit pedestrians on sidewalks or crossing the road.
If you’ve lost a loved one in a pedestrian crash, contacting a dedicated wrongful death attorney can be a crucial step in protecting your family’s rights. An attorney will help investigate what happened, handle conversations with insurers, and work to secure the financial support you need to cover final expenses and other losses.
