St. George, UT (May 8, 2025) – A moped rider was seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash that occurred Tuesday, May 6, at the intersection of River Road and Riverside Drive in St. George. The crash involved a white Dodge Ram and a moped driven by an older man, according to local police.
St. George Police Sgt. Bryan Hendrix reported that the white Dodge Ram, driven by a woman estimated to be around 18 or 19 years old, ran a red light while traveling east on Riverside Drive. As she entered the intersection, the moped—traveling southbound on River Road—collided into the side of the truck.
The moped rider was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and sustained head injuries. Gold Cross Ambulance responded to the scene and transported the injured rider to St. George Regional Hospital for treatment. No additional information on the man’s condition has been released.
Video footage provided by Collision Cam confirmed the truck entered the intersection against the red signal. The driver of the Dodge Ram was cited for the red light violation. Sgt. Hendrix reminded drivers to exercise caution, particularly during rainy weather, emphasizing the need for extra stopping distance and awareness at intersections. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
We hope those injured in this accident recover quickly.
Car Accidents in Utah
Each year, Utah reports tens of thousands of vehicle collisions, many of which occur at intersections like River Road and Riverside Drive in St. George. These crashes often result in serious injuries to vulnerable road users like moped riders and bicyclists. Without the protection that vehicles offer, riders are far more likely to suffer significant harm in a crash.
In many of these cases, one overlooked factor is visibility and driver awareness. Here are a few ways this can play a role in accidents involving smaller vehicles:
- Failure to See Riders: Mopeds, scooters, and motorcycles have a smaller profile than cars, making them harder to spot—especially in poor weather or at dusk.
- Left Turn Collisions: Many crashes happen when a driver turns left without noticing a smaller vehicle heading straight through the intersection. These types of impacts often lead to severe injuries.
- Blind Spots: Larger vehicles, like trucks and SUVs, have substantial blind spots. Drivers must take extra care to check these areas before changing lanes or turning.
- Road Positioning: Riders often move between lanes or ride close to the curb, which can make them less visible to drivers not paying close attention.
