St. George, UT (May 15, 2025) – On Monday afternoon, May 13, a crash occurred near the intersection of Mall Drive and Red Cliffs Drive in St. George, sending two pedestrians to the hospital after a sedan was pushed onto the sidewalk. The incident happened around 3:00 p.m. and involved a white van and a northbound sedan.
The collision began when a white van, waiting to turn left into the Wells Fargo Bank driveway, entered the intersection after being waved through by a northbound driver in the far-right lane. As the van attempted its turn, it collided with a sedan traveling in the second northbound lane. The impact sent the sedan off the road, over the curb, and onto the sidewalk where it struck two pedestrians standing nearby.
Both pedestrians—a man and a woman—were injured. The man sustained a head laceration and was suspected to have a concussion. The woman suffered compound fractures in both lower legs. Emergency personnel treated the victims at the scene before transporting them to St. George Regional Hospital. Both individuals were reported to be awake and responsive during transport.
Mall Drive was closed between Red Cliffs Drive and 450 North for more than an hour as first responders investigated and cleared the area. The road reopened around 4:30 p.m. The driver of the van was issued a citation for failing to yield to oncoming traffic.
We hope those injured in this accident recover quickly.
Car Accidents in Utah
Utah experiences a range of crash types each year, including incidents involving pedestrians. According to the Utah Department of Public Safety, pedestrian injuries are often severe due to the lack of protection compared to vehicle occupants. Many of these accidents occur near intersections or driveways, where visibility is limited and driver assumptions can lead to unexpected collisions.
Understanding how pedestrian-related crashes happen helps bring awareness to prevent them. Below are common situations that contribute to these types of accidents:
- Left-Turn Conflicts: Crashes often occur when drivers turning left misjudge gaps in oncoming traffic or fail to see approaching vehicles. These “courtesy traps,” where one driver waves another through without checking all lanes, can lead to serious multi-lane collisions.
- Driveway and Parking Lot Access: Drivers turning into businesses or driveways sometimes overlook pedestrians on sidewalks or crossing lanes. These low-speed but high-impact situations pose significant risks, especially in commercial areas.
- Distracted Driving: Phone use, navigation systems, or in-car distractions can take a driver’s attention away from the road just long enough to miss someone in the crosswalk or near the curb.
- Failure to Yield to Pedestrians: Many drivers are unaware of or ignore right-of-way laws at marked and unmarked crosswalks. This is particularly hazardous in areas with high foot traffic.
- Blocked Lines of Sight: Large vehicles or heavy traffic may block a driver’s view, leading them to make unsafe decisions. In multi-lane roadways, this becomes a major risk when one car stops and others continue through.
If you or a loved one was injured in a pedestrian accident, it’s important to speak with a pedestrian accident attorney as soon as possible. These cases require strong evidence, medical documentation, and a clear understanding of Utah’s liability laws. Early legal guidance can make a significant difference.
