Summit Co., UT (June 20, 2025) – A serious crash in Summit County on June 19 left one person critically injured after a small oil tanker overturned onto a car along westbound Interstate 80. The incident began when the semi struck an elk while traveling near the I-80 and U.S. 40 interchange.
According to Lt. Cam Roden of the Utah Highway Patrol, the impact with the elk caused the tanker to tip, landing on a nearby car. The driver of that vehicle was taken to the hospital in serious condition. The semi-truck driver also suffered moderate injuries and was transported for medical care.
Emergency crews arrived quickly at the scene and managed a large oil spill that covered the highway. Westbound lanes of I-80 were temporarily closed, and traffic was rerouted onto U.S. 40 while crews worked to contain the spill and remove debris. A second car reportedly struck the elk after the initial crash, adding to the scene’s complexity. The accident is currently being investigated by law enforcement.
We are wishing a full and fast recovery to everyone injured in this accident.
Car Accidents in Utah

Accidents involving animals and large vehicles are not uncommon on Utah highways. According to the Utah Department of Public Safety, collisions with wildlife, especially on rural highways like I-80, continue to pose serious threats to motorists. These types of crashes can result in major injuries, road closures, and environmental hazards like fuel spills. Staying alert in areas known for wildlife crossings is critical to improving safety.
After a serious crash, many victims are left facing a long road to recovery. Here’s a look at how catastrophic accidents like this one can impact your life:
- Severe Physical Injuries: Being struck by a large vehicle or trapped under heavy machinery can result in spinal injuries, broken bones, or internal trauma requiring long-term care.
- Extended Hospitalization and Recovery: Victims may spend weeks or even months in the hospital. Rehabilitation and physical therapy become part of daily life, affecting work and family responsibilities.
- Financial Burdens: Medical bills, loss of income, and the cost of ongoing treatment create a heavy financial load. Without help, these can lead to lasting debt or bankruptcy.
- Vehicle Replacement and Property Loss: Serious crashes often result in total vehicle loss. Victims must manage the cost and time of replacing their transportation.
- Emotional and Mental Strain: The trauma of surviving such an event can result in anxiety, depression, or PTSD. This emotional toll is just as real as physical injuries.
