Sundance, UT (March 6, 2024) — A series of crashes on State Route 92 led to road closures Thursday afternoon as slick conditions caused multiple vehicles to slide off the roadway.
According to Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Cam Roden, at least four vehicles lost control and veered into a small river in the area between Provo Canyon and Sundance Mountain Resort. Emergency responders, including medical teams and snowplow units, were quickly dispatched to assist those involved.
Some of the involved individuals sustained injuries in the crashes and were transported to area hospitals for treatment. Officials have not yet released information on the severity of their injuries. Road conditions in the area were extremely hazardous, contributing to the crashes.
Authorities indicated that the affected portion of State Route 92 is closer to the Provo Canyon side. Crews worked to clear the scene and assist with recovery efforts, but Lt. Roden estimated it could take several hours before the roadway reopens. The Utah Highway Patrol continues to investigate the incident and urges drivers to use extreme caution when traveling in winter conditions.
Our thoughts are with those injured in these crashes, and we hope for their full recovery.
Car Accidents in Utah

Snow and ice create dangerous conditions for drivers in Utah each year. According to state crash reports, a significant number of accidents occur on icy or snowy roads, often resulting in injuries and road closures.
When driving in hazardous conditions, it is crucial to remain aware of potential risks. Below are some common mistakes drivers make during winter weather:
- Driving Too Fast for Conditions: Slippery roads reduce traction, making it harder to stop quickly. Drivers who fail to adjust their speed risk losing control of their vehicles, leading to accidents.
- Sudden Braking or Acceleration: Quick stops or rapid acceleration can cause skidding on icy surfaces. Gradual braking and smooth acceleration help maintain control and prevent sliding.
- Not Using Proper Tires: Winter or all-season tires provide better grip on snowy roads. Using worn-out or summer tires increases the likelihood of losing control in icy conditions.
- Following Too Closely: Icy roads require longer stopping distances. Keeping a safe following distance allows drivers more time to react and stop safely.
- Overconfidence in Four-Wheel Drive: While four-wheel-drive vehicles offer better traction, they do not improve braking on icy roads. Drivers should still exercise caution in winter conditions.
