Why Do Windstorms Happen?
Utah has many unique features and geographical elements, as well as many different weather patterns. One consequence of these features is the occasional strong windstorms that come through. These windstorms are caused by the close-by Wasatch Mountain Range, which becomes a natural wind funnel. This causes the air to accelerate over the peaks and down slopes. This creates strong “downslope winds,” when the right elements come together. The wind speeds can get really high, most recently getting around 90 mph.
The highest wind speed ever recorded in Utah was in 1999 at the Brigham City Airport, with speeds at 113 mph. In September 2020, there was a windstorm, with wind speeds at 97 mph at Logan Peak, according to an article by Deseret News.
What Damage Do Windstorms Cause?
These intense winds caused power outages and damage, as well as delays in traffic. After this famous Utah windstorm, there were almost 200,000 houses and businesses that lost their electrical power. There was also a lot of damage done to homes and buildings, mostly caused by trees being toppled. That 2020 windstorm caused one casualty. A truck driver stepped out of his truck, and the wind was so powerful that he was thrown to the ground. This caused him to hit his head on the pavement, which killed him instantly.
What to do During a Windstorm?
If you are driving in intense wind, here are a few tips from Clearcover on how to keep yourself safe.
- Be Aware of Large Vehicles: Larger vehicles are most susceptible to tipping over with high winds. If it is windy, watch those vehicles carefully as you are passing.
- Keep a Safer Distance from Other Care: It is better to keep a distance on all sides of your vehicle, just in case a gust pushes you sideways.
- Keep Your Hands on the Wheel: If you are driving in high winds, which make it harder to steer, make sure that you have a good grip of the wheel.
- Drive Slowly: If the wind speeds are super bad, slow down, so you have better control of your vehicle.
- Do Not Overcorrect if You Are Pushed by a Gust: If there is a strong gust of wind that pushes you one way, do not crank the steering wheel the other way. Because of the unpredictable wind bursts, this can cause you to lose control.
- If the Weather Gets Too Dangerous, Pull Over: If the weather is getting very dangerous, you should pull off on the side and wait until the weather improves. Do not pull off on a busy freeway, since the traffic will be even more dangerous.
These tips are also important if you are riding a motorcycle. Make sure you leave room between you and other vehicles, possibly pick a new route, and be aware of your surroundings. Check this article for more tips on riding a motorcycle in windy weather.
