Utah City: The Cutting Edge Development of Utah

Deep in the heart of Vineyard, there has been a large open dirt field. What used to be the U.S. Steel Geneva Works is now being converted to the illustrious Utah City. This development, started by the Flagship Cos. and Woodbury Corp., is planned to be an “over 700-acre master-planned development focusing on sustainability and walkability in Vineyard”.

Available to the citizens from Interstate 15, off of exit 1600 North, 800 North, and Center Street, as well as the Vineyard FrontRunner station. There are plans to have high-end houses, as well as lower-income housing. It will also be home to businesses and eating and groceries stores, all with the highest caliber of technology. It will also be home to the second headquarters of the Huntsman Cancer Institute.

The mayor of Vineyard, Julie Fullmer, stated that “the site will bring community connection, increased recreation, a diverse economy and add access to universities, increasing our talent pipeline”. With the lake right next door, there will be boardwalks that lead to the lakeshore.

They have currently announced Bella’s Market as the first grocery store in Utah City. The Greenline Promenade is “a twelve-acre ribbon of green[…] which will link the Vineyard FrontRunner to the lake, and people to place”. They are planning to have events on these lawns, year-round programs, and play areas. They are also planning to include fitness and sports areas for pickleball, basketball, and other sports.

In the middle of the Greenline Promenade, it will include The Village shopping areas. They also plan to plant 1,000+ trees. According to KSL, “Utah City is hoping to become the first LEED-certified community in the state, focusing on sustainability, net-zero and equity objectives”.

With the size and design of this Utah City, there will be a huge impact on the traffic in Orem and Vineyard. It will be important to be vigilant of how the road situations will change, and how your commute will be impacted.
