Car Accidents in Utah
Rural highways play an important role in connecting Utah’s mountain communities and scenic destinations, but they also pose unique driving risks. According to the Utah Department of Public Safety, crashes on these highways are often linked to speeding, distracted driving, and wildlife crossings. Due to higher speeds and limited access points, rural highway collisions tend to result in more serious injuries.
Navigating a crash scene on a highway can be stressful. Here are key steps to take immediately after a highway accident:
- Get to a Safe Location: If your vehicle is drivable, pull over to the shoulder or a nearby turnout to avoid blocking traffic. Staying in active lanes puts you at risk for further injury.
- Check Yourself and Others for Injuries: Quickly assess your condition and those around you. If anyone is hurt, call 911 immediately and follow their instructions while waiting for responders.
- Turn On Hazard Lights and Use Warning Devices: Activating your hazard lights and placing cones or triangles (if available) can alert approaching traffic to the accident, especially in early morning or low-visibility conditions.
- Exchange Information Without Admitting Fault: Collect names, insurance details, and license plate numbers from other drivers, but avoid discussing who may have been at fault until authorities complete their investigation.
- Take Photos and Record Observations: Document the scene, including vehicle damage, road conditions, and any signage. These details are often crucial for insurance claims or legal cases.
