Car Accidents in Utah
Crashes continue to pose a major concern in Utah, with thousands of serious injuries and hundreds of fatalities occurring on the roads each year. According to data from the Utah Department of Public Safety, driver distraction, speed, and following too closely remain leading factors. Utah’s emergency services are constantly working to reduce crash numbers, but accidents remain a reality for many drivers.
Understanding how auto insurance works in the aftermath of a crash can make a meaningful difference in your recovery:
- Utah’s No-Fault System: Utah drivers must first use their own insurance for medical bills under the no-fault system. This coverage—called Personal Injury Protection (PIP)—covers up to $3,000 in medical costs regardless of fault. Claims beyond this amount may require legal action against the other driver.
- Bodily Injury Liability: If you meet Utah’s injury threshold, you can pursue a claim against the at-fault driver. This may cover medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Documenting injuries and expenses is essential for building a solid claim.
- Dealing with Property Damage: Your collision or comprehensive insurance can cover vehicle repairs. If the other driver was at fault and insured, their liability coverage may also apply. It’s important to get estimates and photos to support any claim.
- Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage: If the other driver lacks sufficient insurance, your UM/UIM policy steps in. Many Utah drivers rely on this coverage when crashes involve uninsured motorists or hit-and-runs.
