Car Accidents in Utah
Interstate highways like I-15 see some of Utah’s most serious traffic accidents. As one of the busiest corridors in the state, I-15 is frequently the site of high-speed collisions, especially in Utah County. According to the Utah Department of Transportation, crashes on highways often lead to more severe injuries due to speed, volume of traffic, and limited stopping distance.
After a crash, knowing what to do at the scene is critical. Here are a few important actions every driver should keep in mind:
- Check for Injuries and Call 911: Always assess yourself and others for injuries immediately. Even if the crash seems minor, calling 911 ensures that medical help and law enforcement are on the way to handle the situation safely.
- Move to a Safe Area if Possible: If your vehicle is operable and you’re not seriously hurt, move it to the shoulder or a safe location nearby. Staying in active traffic lanes increases the risk of a secondary collision.
- Exchange Information: Gather the other driver’s name, contact information, driver’s license number, license plate, and insurance policy. Try to stay calm and avoid placing or accepting blame at the scene.
- Document the Scene: Take pictures of the damage, vehicle positions, skid marks, traffic signs, and any visible injuries. This documentation may become crucial for insurance claims or legal cases.
- Avoid Discussing Fault: It’s best to limit conversation and avoid saying anything that could be interpreted as admitting fault. Let the investigation determine what happened.
