Washington, UT (May 9, 2025) – A serious two-vehicle accident occurred around 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7, at the intersection of 3090 South and 20 East in Washington, resulting in multiple people being transported to the hospital with significant injuries.
The crash involved a New Wave Construction Ford F-450 work truck pulling a flatbed trailer loaded with a mini excavator and an Audi Q5 carrying four individuals. According to Lt. Kory Klotz with the Washington City Police Department, the truck was traveling eastbound on 3090 South when the Audi entered the intersection. The truck’s driver attempted to swerve but ultimately collided with the rear passenger side of the Audi, sending it off the roadway and into a retaining ditch. The truck jackknifed, and the trailer tipped over, throwing the mini excavator onto the sidewalk near a utility pole.
Inside the Audi were an adult woman and three juveniles. All four were seriously hurt and transported by Gold Cross Ambulance to St. George Regional Hospital for further care. Emergency crews from the Washington City Fire Department, Dixie Power, and the Streets Department also responded to the scene to assist with cleanup and ensure safety.
Lt. Klotz stated that early findings suggest the Audi driver failed to yield at the stop sign, and she will likely face a citation following the conclusion of the investigation. Authorities are also looking into additional factors that may have played a role in the crash.
We hope those injured in this accident recover quickly.
Car Accidents in Utah
Utah is no stranger to serious vehicle crashes, many of which occur at intersections controlled by stop signs rather than traffic lights. In 2022, there were more than 61,000 reported crashes across the state, with intersection-related incidents making up a significant portion. Many of these result from driver error, distractions, or a simple failure to yield.
For drivers and passengers across Utah, intersection collisions are a dangerous reality. Here are some key risks specific to stop-sign-controlled intersections:
- Driver Misjudgment: Misreading another vehicle’s speed or assuming it will stop can lead to side-impact crashes, which often result in serious injuries, especially for passengers seated on the impacted side.
- Visibility Challenges: Parked cars, landscaping, or poor signage can obstruct a driver’s line of sight at intersections, making it harder to spot cross traffic.
- High Speed Entry: Drivers in a hurry may roll through or ignore stop signs altogether, creating extremely hazardous situations for other road users.
- Teen or Inexperienced Drivers: Newer drivers may lack the awareness or judgment to handle intersections properly, especially when traveling with distractions or passengers.
- Unmarked or Poorly Lit Intersections: In some areas, worn road paint or poor lighting can make it unclear who has the right of way, heightening crash risks during early mornings or evenings.
