What Happened to the Provo River Parkway Extension?

Back in 2022, the Provo River Parkway project had an extension approved. The extension would connect Vivian Park to Deer Creek Dam, a 3.5 mile addition. At the time of the agreement in 2022, the project’s budget was supposed “to cost roughly $34 million”. According to the UDOT website, the project was supposed to be finished in early 2023, but it is currently “on hold and the construction schedule is unknown at this time”.

This information pamphlet form UDOT provides some of the early complications for the trails construction. “The new trail segment will be a combination of the trail and retaining wall typical section concepts. The surrounding environment presents challenges to constructing the trail due to the following: Close proximity of the trail alignment to the highway, river, railroad and steep canyon walls, and geological instability of existing slopes “. These complications did not stop the project from moving forward. For a while, the project had no new information.

Chelsea from the Provo River Parkway UDOT project let us know that construction has halted. There is a current dispute with where the property boundaries lie. This has caused this project to move into a litigation phase. Currently, there is no timeline for when it will move forward, while they wait for this dispute to end.

Provo River Parkway Trail

The Provo River Parkway Trail is currently a 15 mile paved trail that starts “at the Utah Lake State Park where the Provo River empties into Utah Lake”. The trail follows the Provo River as it moves through the city of Provo. According to Explore Utah Valley, the trail is meant for “walkers, joggers, bicyclists, horseback riders and rollerbladers”. The trail also follows Bridal Veil Falls, which is a popular scenic lookout. The trail has some uphill and downhill portions for riders to be aware of as they are on the trail. Also at the bottom of the canyon, there is Voltage Rentals, where you can rent an e-bike.
