T-bone crashes, often referred to as side-impact collisions, are among the most dangerous types of accidents in Utah. According to the Utah Department of Public Safety, these crashes account for a high percentage of serious injuries and fatalities. Intersections are especially prone to such collisions due to misjudgments in speed and distance or failure to yield.

When fatal crashes occur, families are often left facing more than just grief. Here are several legal and financial considerations survivors may encounter:

  • Wrongful Death Claims: When a family loses a loved one due to another driver’s error, they may be entitled to file a wrongful death claim. This can include compensation for funeral costs, lost future income, and emotional suffering.
  • Funeral and Burial Costs: These expenses can add up quickly, especially when they occur unexpectedly. A legal claim may help offset these sudden financial burdens.
  • Loss of Companionship: In addition to financial loss, the surviving family may be compensated for the emotional loss of a spouse, parent, or child. Utah law allows for these types of non-economic damages.
  • Insurance Company Communications: After a fatal accident, insurance adjusters may reach out quickly. It is critical not to provide statements or accept offers until you’ve spoken to an attorney who can protect your family’s interests.
  • Time Limit to File a Claim: Utah law sets a specific time frame for filing a wrongful death claim—generally two years from the date of death. Acting within that window is essential for preserving your rights.

If your family has lost a loved one in a crash, contact a wrongful death attorney as soon as possible. Having legal guidance during such a painful time can ease the burden of navigating complex legal and insurance matters.
