Brain injury and accident cases tend to be very complicated matters given how such injuries can affect the course of someone’s life. We’d like to go over the different types of brain injuries right now and then consider how our team can help clients.
Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI)
A traumatic brain injury refers to a type of brain injury that is the result of physical trauma to the head. This can take a number of different forms.
- Concussions – A concussion occurs when the brain is shaken or jarred inside of the skull. This typically occurs because of a violent blow to the face, head, or body.
- Brain Contusions – A contusion refers to bruising and bleeding of the brain, which may require surgical removal in severe cases.
- Coup-Contrecoup – These types of brain contusions appear both at the site of impact and on the opposite side of the brain. These occur when the trauma is strong enough to cause the brain to collide with the skull and then strike the opposite side of the skull.
- Diffuse Axonal – Caused by severe shaking or strong head rotation (as in shaken baby syndrome), this injury results in tearing to the structures of the brain.
- Penetrating Head Injuries – Penetrating head injuries refer to any serious trauma to the head that results in the skull being penetrated. Given the nature of these injuries, the injuries to the brain can be varied and quite severe.
Acquired Brain Injuries (ABI)
Though traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are also acquired brain injuries (ABIs), we wanted to consider some potential ABIs as well. An ABI is defined as an injury to the brain that occurred after birth and is not related to a congenital defect of some kind.
- Anoxia – This is a brain injury caused by a lack of oxygen to the brain.
- Hypoxic – This is a brain injury caused by a lack of blood flow to the brain.
Other potential causes of ABI include stroke, infection, severe illness, tumors, toxic exposure, and substance abuse. Traumatic injuries can result in ABIs.
The Dangers of Brian Injuries
No matter what kind of brain injury you experience, the effects of a brain injury can be severe, and may have lifelong repercussions. Brian injuries can affect a person’s motor skills, speech, vision, and muscle control. A brain injury can also affect memory, cognition, mood, and overall mental capacity.
Children who suffer a brain injury early in life may face a life of challenges, whether mentally or physically. Even adults who suffer brain injuries will need great medical attention and support to assist them in leading a normal life.
