Utah Labor Day Popular Destinations and Traffic

Labor Day is finally here. With school getting back into the grove and the fall weather creeping closer, this is many people’s last chance to enjoy a taste of summer. This means that Labor Day becomes one of the busiest weekends for traveling, especially road trips. This means the roads get busy, especially in certain locations.

St. George

One of the most popular locations for locals all around, St. George is the ultimate destination. With all-year-round good weather and numerous activities to do, it’s a no-brainer to make this a weekend destination. The temperature usually sits in the high 80s in September, which means you can enjoy swimming and hiking. You could visit White Reef, Silver Reef, and Anasazi trails while you are down the Southern Utah area. You also could go to Tuachahn Amphitheatre for Broadway level shows.

The main route in and out of St. George is through the I-15, but it can get congested.

Cedar City

Just a little north of St. George is the slightly less popular, but just as fun Cedar City. With easy access to Zions National Park and Dixie National Forest, you can spend your days hiking the gorgeous landscapes. Close by is Angels Landing, one of the most precarious hikes in Utah. It is not a hike for the faint of heart or young children. If you go to Cedar City during the Labor Weekend, you could also catch a show during the Utah Shakespeare Festival. Since Cedar City and St. George are so close to each other, you can easily take both in during the weekend.

Park City

Although this city is known for its excellent skiing and snow sports, it is also full of fun activities for the warmer weather. There are numerous hikes you could go on. But during Labor Day Weekend, they also celebrate Miner’s Day. There is live music, parades, and other activities for every age. While you are there, you can also try the bobsleds, alpine slide, or take the gondola. There are also many lakes nearby where you can go boating. The most direct route is through Parley’s Canyon, but canyons can be dangerous with too many crowds and cars.

Garden City/Bear Lake

In the Northern part of Utah and Southern Idaho, there is the famous Bear Lake in Garden City. This lake is known for the most beautiful views, for boaters, swimmers, and hikers. You can go there and rent a boat, or you can sit on the beach and play in the water. There is also the Main Street where you can get local food, including a raspberry shake. If you want to do a fun hike, you can go to the Minnetonka Caves. You will also take the I-15 to Bear Lake, though it will also be crowded. If you want to miss some of the crowds, extend your stay by a few days.

Before you go on these roadtrips, it is a good idea to plan your route and check the roads. The summer is one of the best times for road work, possible flooding from melting water, or even closed roads for wildfires. If you can plan alternate routes to avoid those disasters, it will make your road trip go by easier.

Safety is the highest priority when you hit the road, especially with your family members. Being prepared for all disasters will help you stay safe. If you are the driver, stay vigilant for dangers on the roads, and keep yourself alert, with no drowsy driving.
